Mazda released the CX-50 to join the CX-5 in the compact crossover SUV lineup with several shared features. This model offers two powertrains for highway and off-road capabilities. The 2023 CX-5 received a boost in engine power and a 7.0-inch LCD gauge cluster. Plus, a Drive Select that comes with Off-road mode.

The CX-5 comes with a 10.3-inch non-touchscreen interface for navigation and media. The base CX-50 has an 8.8-inch display with a 10.25-inch screen available on higher trims. Both models are compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

 

The CX-50 comes standard with an eight-speaker audio system. It also has an option for a 12-speaker Bose sound system on higher trim levels. On the other hand, The CX-5 has a four-speaker audio system as standard, with upgrades for a six-speaker audio system and a 10-speaker Bose sound system, depending on the trim level.

Exterior Design

The longer hood, exaggerated fender flares, black trim around the grille, and fake vents distinguish the CX-50. The CX-5 retains its elegance with refined and sleek exterior styling, matching body-coloured lower bumpers and wheel arches. 

Both models come standard with 17-inch alloy wheels. The CX-50 has upgrade options for 20-inch wheels and exclusive all-terrain tires with 18-inch wheels, depending on the trim level. The CX-5 also has an upgrade option, but only one for 19-inch alloy wheels.

Interior Comfort and Cargo Space

Both vehicles have similar legroom, but the CX-5 offers more cargo space of up to 1,680 litres. The CX-50 has up to 1,595. Regarding comfort, Mazda integrated a well-crafted steering wheel and front seat armrests for maximum coziness. So, both models provide ample room for five passengers, with the CX-5 offering a bit more storage capacity.

Performance Features

Both models have the Skyativ-G 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine. It produces 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. Plus, it comes with a six-speed automatic transmission, and AWD is standard on all trims. 

Moreover, higher trims for both models feature high-powered engine options, delivering up to 256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. The CX-50 has a towing capacity of up to 3,500 pounds, while the CX-5 can tow up to 2,000 pounds.

Safety and Driver Assistance Features

Both vehicles include Mazda’s expansive i-ACTIVSENSE safety features. They include Forward Obstruction Warning, Advanced Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane-Keep Assist, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Additionally, some higher trims include Traffic Jam Assist, among a few other safety features.
